CLUB NIX 173: Why Six Good Records Didn’t Make the Mix
I started this edition with twenty records. I liked all twenty. That was the problem. When I’m digging for CLUB NIX, the first decision is usually pretty easy: does a record do something to me or not? The harder part comes later. You start putting the tracks together and suddenly a record you loved on its own doesn’t work anymore. It slows the mix down. Repeats something another track already says better. Or simply takes the hour in the wrong direction. So I started removing them. Eventually, fourteen were left.
Even Adriatique didn’t make it
At one point I had new music from Adriatique and Protoculture in the selection. Both went. Not because I suddenly stopped liking the records. They just weren’t making this mix better. And that’s something I keep coming back to with CLUB NIX. A track doesn’t earn its place because of the artist behind it, the label it’s on or how well it might work on its own. It has to make sense between the record before it and the one after it. That sounds obvious. It isn’t always easy.
Finding the hour
The final version starts with the deep, patient sound of Guy J’s Placebo. From there, Ian Kinsella, STAY GOLDEN, DAVI and Dilby slowly bring in more movement before Jimi Jules & Modern Tales change the colour with Whisper To Me. That’s probably the point where #173 really becomes itself. sone., Assaf Michael & Reef Kopel, Dodi & Buka and Chewna pull it somewhere less predictable, before LADIES & GENTLEMEN takes things right onto the dancefloor. Different records. Different corners of electronic music. I wasn’t trying to make them fit a genre. I was listening for whether the next record made me want to keep going.
A classic, reworked
And then there is the final track. BT & Jan Johnston – Mercury & Solace, in a recent remix by Sasha. The original is a proper classic, but this version is new. And that’s exactly why it works so well here. After thirteen recent records, you suddenly hear something familiar through a different lens. Not nostalgia. Not a throwback. Just a great record finding a new place in the mix. So it stayed.
